When Arthur Clarence Pilcher was born on September 1, 1895, in Cloud, Kansas, his father, James, was 40 and his mother, Helen, was 35. He received his training at Camp Doniphan before going overseas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Medical Detachment, 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He participated in three major battles at St. Mihiel and the Argonne before he was killed in the Argonne, October 9, 1918 while giving aid to the wounded. He is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France. His name is commemorated on the First Infantry Division monument in Saint-Juvin, France but his surname is inscribed as Piocher. His name is also listed on the Memorial Plaque in Glasco Cemetery, Glasco, Kansas.
