When William Roy Shook was born on January 5, 1890, in West Lafayette, Ohio, his father, William, was 51 and his mother, Caroline, was 32. He was a member of the Masons and a member of the Methodist Church in West Lafayette. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company D, 3rd Machine Gun Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action in November 1918 in France at the age of 28 and is now buried in Fairfield Cemetery, West Lafayette, Coshocton County, Ohio, USA.
