When Ludvig Gerhard Meling was born on May 20, 1890, his father, Erik, was 33 and his mother, Malinde, was 32. He entered the military service in North Dakota and served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on October 4, 1918 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
