Chester C. Mills was born on August 10, 1893 in Hancock County, Illinois. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Mills. He was a telegraph operator for the railroad before the war. He entered the military service in Galesburg, Illinois on May 27, 1918. He was sent to Camp Gordon, Ga. and went overseas on August 1, 1918. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company K, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action but declared "Missing" on October 11, 1918 in France at the age of 25 and is memorialized on Tablets of the Missing, Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
