In May 1918, he was working as a clerk for the Goodrich Rubber Tire Company in Akron, OH, when he was called up for military service. After he reached France, he was assigned to Co. K, 28th Infantry, First Division. He served at the battle of St. Mihiel and in the Meuse-Argonne offensive but was killed in action in Argonne on 5 October 1918.
