When Johannes "John" Blum was born on December 1, 1892, in Ritzville, Washington, his father, Andreas, was 31 and his mother, Katharina, was 26. Until leaving for the army he had spent all his life in his county. The last few years he farmed for himself. John was called early in the draft and after training at Camp Lewis was sent overseas. he served in the U.S. Army during World War I as a Private in Company L, 28th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on October 3, 1918 in France at the age of 25 and is now buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, Departement de la Meuse, Lorraine, France.
