Born on December 7, 1895 in Chicago Illinois. Upon graduating from Western Military Academy in 1917, Collins entered the Army and was assigned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment. Collins served in several assignments in the US and overseas including the 42nd Infantry Division which arrived in France in December 1944. This division played a crucial role during the Battle of the Bulge. Collins was also credited with the liberation of the Dachau Concentration Camp. In 1954 Collins retired and moved to Salzburg where he was an honorary citizen.
