James R. Dowd was born in 1918 in Massachusetts. Captain Dowd left Harvard Law School in 1940 and volunteered for active duty as a 2nd Lt. in the 7th Field Artillery of the 1st Division. He went overseas in August, 1942 and in November participated in the assault on Oran, Algeria. He fought through the African and Sicily campaigns, receiving the Silver Star for Gallantry. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France and is now buried in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA.
