Robert Edward “Johnny” Johnson He is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School, Elizabeth, (NJ), where the family resided prior to moving to Mountainside. He joined the Army, April 3, 1942, and after 13 weeks of basic training at Camp Croft and Indiantown Gap, PA, he was sent to England, and then to Africa. After the Africa invasion, he was made a Corporal, and after taking part in the Sicily invasion, Robert was promoted to Sergeant. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France at the age of 24 and is now buried in Fairview Cemetery, Westfield, Union County, New Jersey, USA.
