Jess W. Hetrick was born in 1911 in Nebraska. He was the eldest child of Frank and Stella Jane (Bowman) Hetrick. His mother, Stella, passed away when he was around two years old in 1913. His highest education was Grammar School. By 1943, Jesse had migrated east to Umatilla, Oregon and had been trained in pattern and model making. On a trip to Tacoma, Washington, Jesse enlisted in the U.S. Army as a Private. He served in the 1st Division, 18th Regiment which participated in the initial onset of Operation Overlord that stormed Omaha Beach. Military records indicate that Jesse died of wounds sustained and was awarded The Purple Heart.
