David George Rawleigh was born on February 22, 1920 in Swain, Allegany County, New York. He enlisted in the United States Army December 3, 1940 at Utica, New York, before this country was yet at war. He was immediately sent to Fort Hamilton, New York for his basic training. Before departing for overseas service, he was on duty at Fort Devons, Massachusetts; Fort Blanding, Florida; Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Indian Town Gap, Pennsylvania. On August 1, 1942, he set sail from Brooklyn, New York with his comrades aboard the Queen Mary and arrived at Clydebank, Scotland five days later; after which he was stationed at Weymouth, England. Sergeant Brown was first under enemy fire at Arzaw, on November 8, 1942 in the North African campaign. Later in April of 1943, he participated in the Invasion of Sicily. He died on July 10, 1944 in France at the age of 24 and is now buried in Fairview Cemetery, New Berlin, Chenango County, New York, USA.
