Hertz Leroy Whitebread was born on April 11, 1917 in Drums, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Shickshinny Lutheran Church. Hertz entered the service on February 3, 1942, and received his training at Camp Wheeler, GA.; Camp Blanding, Fla., and Indiantown Gap, prior to going to England. He served in the African and Sicilian campaigns and had been at a rest camp in England before the invasion of France. Hertz served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Staff Sergeant in the 1st Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944 during the invasion on Omaha Beach, France at the age of 27 and is now buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Arlington County, Virginia, USA.
