Frederick C. Knyrim was born on March 14, 1921 in Hazleton, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Christian Knyrim and Hilda E. Ehmer Knyrim. He graduated from Hazleton High School in 1939 and was employed at the Duplan Silk Co. plant here before his induction. He was also a member of the Grace Reformed church. Fredercick entered the service on June 19, 1942 and received his training at Fort Meade, Md., Camp Lee, Va., and Camp Kilmre, New Jersey. He was sent overseas in November, 1942. He participated in both the entire North African and Sicilian campaigns and was stricken with malaria after both campaigns, recovering at rest camps. After the Sicilian campaign he was sent to England and from there to France. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Private First Class in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. Frederick was Killed in Action on July 1, 1944 in France at the age of 23 and is now buried in Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-sur-Mer, France. He also has a cenotaph located in St. John's Cemetery, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
