Norman Earl Barnes was born on July 27, 1910 in Harrison County, Texas. He was the son of William Oliver Barnes and Alice Gray Owens Barnes. Norman went to College of Marshall and graduated from Austin College in Sherman with a B.A. in Education. He taught at Gunter High School from 1935-1939. He died in a plane crash in the Myanmar area which he was a Co-pilot. He died on July 6, 1945 at the age of 34 and is now buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Marshall, Harrison County, Texas, USA.

Barnes served as an aviator in WWII and was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
