Peter A. Bunce was born in 1915 in New York. He resided in Nassau County, New York prior to the war. He enlisted in the Army on March 13, 1941 prior to the war. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Author, editor, and/or reporter and also as Single, without dependents. Peter served as a Captain and Pilot on P-38J #42-104378, 449th Fighter Squadron, 51st Fighter Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

During a mission Peter radioed that both of his engines were not working and that he was bailing out. It is currently unknown what caused his engines to malfunction. Peter was missing during the war on May 8, 1945. Having actually gone "Missing" on the above date, he was not officially declared by the military as being dead until May 9, 1946. His name is commemorated on the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Peter was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
