William Radford Guffey was born on September 4, 1911 in Gay, Jackson County, North Carolina. He was the son of William Homer Guffey and Allie Buchanan Guffey. William served in the US Air Corps as a Private First Class and food dropper in an aircraft during World War II. He died on February 18, 1944 at the age of 32 in Myanmar and is now buried in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, Lemay, St. Louis County, Missouri, USA in a common grave with his crew. He was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
