Born Jan. 10, 1867, known as the "greatest of all Leathernecks" and the "Marine's Marine", he commanded the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division during World War I and later the 13th Commandant of the Marine Corps until 1929. He then became the Superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute until 1942.
