Henry Grady Stone, Jr. was born on December 28, 1921. He was the son of Henry and Grace Hodges Stone. He volunteered for service while in junior class at Clemson College. He served in the US Air Corps as a First Lieutenant during World War II. 1Lt Stone was killed in a crash while piloting a C-87 aircraft on a mission from India to China on November 13, 1944 at the age of 22. He is now buried in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Florence, Florence County, South Carolina, USA.

Henry was one of over 2000 Americans who lost their lives defending China from their Japanese invaders from 1941-1945. He is commemorated on the The Monument to the Aviation Martyrs in the War of Resistance Against Japan in Nanjing, China.
