Donald Paul Gromis was born on November 29, 1922. He attended Syracuse University one year after graduation. He entered the service on August 9, 1942, and before leaving the U.S. had been stationed successively at Miami and Clearwater, Fla.; Sioux Falls, S.D.; Las Vegas, Nv.; Boise, Idaho, and Sioux City, Iowa. He served in the 5562nd Bomber Squadron, 388th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Technical Sergeant and Radio Operator of #42-5906 "Sondra Kay" aircraft during World War II. Donald was killed in a plane crash at Upper Cilgee Farm, Llanyre on September 16, 1943 after a raid on U Boat Pens at La Pallice, SW France. He is now buried in the Eplers Church Cemetery, Leesport, Berks County, Pennsylvania, USA. He was one of the many brave Americans of the 388th Bomber Group who lost their lives in aerial operations against the German forces from June 1943 - August 1945.
