Richard Elwood Woodyatt was born on April 26, 1916 in Dixon, Illinois. He was the son of George Thomas Woodyatt and Ruth Whipple Woodyatt. Richard was a B-17 tail gunner assigned to 535th Bomber Squadron, 381st Bomber Group. He was killed in action on November 5, 1943 during a mission to Gelsenkirchen, flying aboard 42-30852. His body was never recovered and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing, Netherlands American Cemetery, Margraten, Netherlands. He also has a cenotaph located in Oakwood Cemetery, Dixon, Lee County, Illinois.
