Saturnino Chavez, Jr. was born in 1913 in Carrizozo, New Mexico. He served in the 347th Bomber Squadron, 99th Bomber Group, Heavy as a Staff Sergeant/Tail Gunner on B-17 F-30-VE, Cantwell's crew during World War II. SSGT Chavez was killed in action on October 1, 1943, when his plane was forced down by enemy action on the Switzerland frontier. He was temporarily buried He was temporarily buried in what was then the American Cemetery in Münsingen, Switzerland. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
