William McCowan was born in Dunblane, in 1817, and worked as a weaver in the town before emigrating to the United States in the late 1850s with his family. He volunteered in the 58th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. William died on April 2, 1864 due to erysipelas, a virulent bacterial skin infection. He is now buried in the Dunblane Cathedral Churchyard, Dunblane , Stirling, Scotland.
