McElroy M. Nangle was the son of John Sherman Nangle and Irene Bentz Nangle. He was a C-47 pilot in the 313th Air Transport Group, based at A-25, France. He requested to be transferred to a P-47 Fighter Group which was approved. He took off from Prosnes, France on training flight on 28 September 1944 and no word of his whereabout were known until 23 October 1944. After extensive search, the aircraft which he was flying was found at Sommepy (T6877). The aircraft was completely destroyed and the pilot had been killed. Lt Nangle has been buried by a Frenchman who lives in the vicinity of the crash. No one saw the aircraft crash. The aircraft was in such a state that no mechanical failure could be determined. He is now buried in the Epinal American Cemetery, Dinozé, France.
