Martin Benedict Murphy was born on February 17, 1919, in Daviess County, Kentucky. He was the son of James Robert Murphy and Mary Theresa Rummage Murphy.

Martin enlisted in Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana on March 17, 1942. He served in Company F, 325th Glider Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, as a Private First Class during World War II. PFC Murphy was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 25 in France. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
