Simmie Catlett Ervin was born on August 4, 1917, in Ordway, Colorado. He was the son of Evaline Caroline Hulen Ervin.

Simmie served in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division as a Sergeant during World War II. A passenger on the C47 #42-100876 "Chalk 58," he was killed in the crash of the airplane on June 6, 1944, when it was shot down by flak during the transport mission. Out of the 18 passengers, Sgt Ervin was the only passenger who died with the airplane crew as he was wounded and unable to bail out.

Sgt Ervin is now buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, San Mateo County, California, USA.
