Haugan Weld Figgis served in the 379th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group, as a Second Lieutenant and Pilot of a P-47 during World War II. On September 11, 1944, 2Lt Figgis took off from Advanced Landing Ground A-27 in Rennes St-Jacques, for a mission. Around 15:00H, he was hit by flak during the fighting for the liberation of Brest and was able to bail out of his airplane before it crashed. He landed in the town of Pouldergat wherein, through the help of the local residents, he was recovered by the American Army.

Figgis died on April 26, 1995, at Leelanau Memorial Hospital Care Center in Michigan, after a battle with cancer. His current burial place is unknown.
