Walter Wood Goddard, Jr. was born on April 28, 1890, in San Antonio, Texas. He was the son of Walter Wood Goddard and Lillian Eastman Phillips Goddard.

Walter Wood, Jr. was a graduate of the University of Chicago and was a member of Chi Psi Fraternity and Aero Club of France. He entered the aviation service in May 1917 and trained at Illinois State University, St. Maximent, Chateauroux, and Issoudun, France. 2Lt Goddard was killed in an airplane accident on September 28, 1918, in Issoudun. His body is buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Washington, Tazewell County, Illinois, USA.
