William F. Herrick was born on July 31, 1890, in Natick, Massachusetts. He studied at Newton High School, entered the Institute in 1907, and attended until 1908, where he studied the course Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Tech Show and manager of the Golf Club.
At the outbreak of the war, he enlisted in the Aviation Section of the US Signal Corps and received his ground training at the Institute. He was sent to France in November 1917 and was later transferred to Foggia, Italy, where he was commissioned First Lieutenant. He had qualified to go to the front and was awaiting orders at the time of his death in an airplane accident on September 16, 1918, in Issoudun, France. 1Lt Herrick is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France.
