Clayton C. Ingersoll was born on May 5, 1896, in Rockford, Illinois. He was the son of Winthrop Ingersoll and Harriet Lavinia Caskey Ingersoll. Clayton attended public schools, including high school, and continued his education at Lake Forest Academy and Cornell University.

1Lt Ingersoll served in the 27th Aero Squadron during World War I. He was killed in an airplane accident on April 26, 1918, during his training in Issoudun, France. He is now buried in the Greenwood Cemetery, Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois, USA. 1Lt Ingersoll was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
