Alton Howe Kimball, Jr. was born on November 26, 1895, in Tiffin, Ohio. He was the son of Alton Howe Kimball and Frances Helen Connell Kimball.

Alton Howe, Jr. graduated from Harvard in 1917 and immediately entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for training as an aviator. He was sent to France for further training but was killed in an airplane accident on November 12, 1918, in Issoudun. 2Lt Kimball is now buried in the Saint Michael's Cemetery, Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA. He was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
