Richard Edmund Lloyd was born on December 14, 1892, in Peoria, Illinois. He was employed by the Holden Shoe company when he entered the first officers' training camp at Fort Sheridan. He was one of the groups transferred to the aviation service, training at Chanute Field, Rantoul, where he received his commission.

Richard was sent to France for further training but there met his death in an airplane accident on July 12, 1918. He is now buried in the St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Thiaucourt, France. 1Lt Lloyd was one of the 171 American servicemen who trained at the Third Aviation Instruction Center in France and died between 1917-1919.
