William W. Bateman was born on February 28, 1923 in Danville, Virginia. He served in the 65th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group as a Second Lieutenant during World War II. On August 18, 1944 he flew to Marseille and the Rhone river on a mission. While strafing a power station, Lt. Bateman flew into some high tension power lines and crashed in flames. William was Killed in Action. He is now buried in the Rhone American Cemetery and Memorial, France.
