Henry Kane was born on April 5, 1920, in Scotland and came to the U.S. when he was 10 years old. He had lived in Queens, New York, since. He graduated from Public School 70 and Bryant High School in Astoria. He was a mechanic in the Greyhound Bus Lines in Long Island City before entering the service in March 1941. After his training at Camp Livingston, La., and Ellington Field, Texas, he went overseas.

Henry served in the 612th Bomber Squadron, 401st Bomber Group, Heavy, as a Second Lieutenant and Co-Pilot on the B-17 "Man O’War" #42-38033 during World War II. On March 20, 1944, his crew took off from Station 128 in Deenethorpe, England, on a bombing mission to Frankfurt, Germany. Shot down by flak, four crew members died as a result of this incident while the others were able to survive (including 2Lt Kane). Their airplane crashed between Courlandon and Breuil, France. 2Lt Kane was captured and taken as a prisoner. He was sent to Stalag Luft 1 near Barth, Western Pomerania, Germany.

2Lt Kane also served in the Korean War. He died on December 23, 1955, at the age of 35, and is now buried in the Long Island National Cemetery, East Farmingdale, Suffolk County, New York, USA. He attained his highest rank in the Air Force as a Captain.
