James Allan Machan was born on October 26, 1921, in Battleford, Battleford Census Division, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was the son of Andrew Alexander Machan and Hazel Mae Goodman.

James had three years of high school and was single without dependents upon enlistment. He entered military service in Seattle, Washington, on February 16, 1942. He served in the HQ Company of the 2nd Ranger Battalion as a Private First Class during World War II. PFC Machan was Killed in Action on June 6, 1944, at the age of 22, in Vierville-sur-Mer, during the American assault on Omaha beach in France. He is now buried in the Normandy American Cemetery, Colleville-Sur-Mer, France.
