Byron Homer Garoutte was born on April 19, 1920, in Delano, Kern County, California. He was the son of Homer Anthony Garoutte and Ellena F. Butler Garoutte.

Before America entered the war, Byron crossed into Canada and joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at Vancouver, British Columbia, on August 19, 1941. At the time of his death, he was serving in the 432 Squadron, Leaside Squadron (Saevitir Ad Lucem) of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Warrant Officer II. He was killed on July 4, 1943, when his Wellington HZ481-QO-W was shot down by night fighter pilot Oberfeldwebel Reinhard Kollak of the 7./NJG 4 and crashed at Louveignée, Belgium.
