Comments:

John Benjamin Ruston was born on July 14, 1915, in New York. He was the son of George Ruston and Esther Prudence Aston Ruston.

John served in the 214 (R.A.F.) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Pilot Officer during World War II. On September 21, 1941, aboard the Wellington Mark II W5452 BU-U aircraft, with six aircrew members on board, they took off from RAF Stradishall, in Suffolk, on an operation over Berlin. The mission was successful, the aircraft was on its return flight when, low on fuel, it was diverted to RAF Manston, in Kent, due to heavy fog in Stradishill. Attempting an emergency landing, the Wellington crashed into some trees; five of the airmen perished and one was badly injured in the accident.
The five airmen, including P/O Ruston, who perished in this accident were:
RAFVR Pilot Officer Cyril William ABREY,
RAFVR Sergeant John AITKEN,
RAFVR Sergeant Ivan John GREEN,
RAFVR Sergeant Laurence Douglas KISSACK and
RCAF Pilot Officer John Benjamin RUSTON.
P/O. White survived, injured.
