Earl George Smith was born on January 4, 1920, in Worcester, Worcester County, Massachusetts. He was the son of George D. Smith (deceased when Earl enlisted) and Martha Cathill (nee McNeil) Smith, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Earl served in the 428 Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Warrant Officer Second Class during World War II. He was declared Missing in Action on August 3, 1943, when his Halifax aircraft #ES 212 went down in the sea during operations over enemy territory.
