Louis Maurice Layman was born on February 6, 1893, in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia. He was the son of George William Layman and Mary Lydia "Lillie" Moomaw Layman. He studied at Daleville Academy, Washington and Lee University, and the University of Michigan before moving to Canada in 1914 to work in a lumber camp. Influenced by wartime patriotism, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in December 1914, altering his middle name from Moomaw to Maurice to avoid anti-German prejudice. He served in the 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion as a Lance Corporal during World War I.
LCpl Layman was Killed in Action on August 13, 1916, in Belgium. He is now buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground Transport Farm, Zillebeke, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium. He also has a cenotaph in the Daleville Cemetery, Daleville, Botetourt County, Virginia, USA.
