Bruce Campbell McDowell was born on May 31, 1884, in Woolwich, Royal Borough of Greenwich, Greater London, England. He was the son of James Campbell McDowell and Louisa Jane McDowell. He was married to Elizabeth Young McDowell. He arrived in the USA on April 7, 1907, and was naturalized on January 23, 1912. He served in the 7th Battalion, Canadian Infantry (British Columbia Regiment), as a Private during World War I.
Pvt McDowell died from his wounds received in battle on June 5, 1916, when his leg was severely wounded during the operation. He is now buried in the Railway Dugouts Burial Ground Transport Farm, Zillebeke, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
