George Walter McLean was born on June 8, 1885, in Bodie, Mono County, California. He was the son of John and Amelia McLean. He was married to Ethel Mildred Campbell. He enlisted with the 138th Battalion on March 11, 1916 and later transferred to the 50th Battalion. He served on the battlefields of France, fighting at Vimy Ridge, where he was wounded by shrapnel in May. Despite being injured in the arm and leg and later gassed during the fighting at Lens in August, he returned to the trenches for a third time.

Pvt McLean died on November 7, 1917. He is now buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium.
