Walter Joseph Gartland was born on December 1, 1923, in Camden County, New Jersey. He was the son of Henry Thomas Gartland Sr. and Anna A. Haenel Gartland. He attended Catholic schools, graduating from Camden Catholic High School. After completing his education, he worked at the Naval Aircraft Factory at the Philadelphia Navy Yard until he entered the army on May 1, 1944. He was assigned to the 69th Infantry Division and received his training at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, before being sent overseas in November 1944.
PFC Gartland was Killed in Action on April 16, 1945, during the Battle of Weißenfels in Germany. He is now buried in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Hainesport, Burlington County, New Jersey, USA.
