Major Harry Tower was a United States Army Air Forces officer who served with the 439th Troop Carrier Group, IX Troop Carrier Command, during the Second World War. On the night of 5–6 June 1944, during Mission Albany, the airborne assault that carried the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division into Normandy, Tower commanded the second serial of 36 C-47 Skytrain aircraft departing from RAF Upottery (USAAF Station 462). After the lead serial under Lt. Col. Charles H. Young penetrated heavy cloud over the Cotentin Peninsula, Tower's formation also entered the cloud bank and became widely dispersed before encountering intense German anti-aircraft fire. Despite these hazardous conditions, his serial continued its mission, contributing to the successful delivery of American paratroopers during the opening hours of the D-Day invasion. Although Major Tower is recognized for leading the second serial during Mission Albany, few details of his military career or personal life have been published in official histories or archival sources.
