1st Lt Elmer L. Cudworth was born on May 26, 1916. He was the co-pilot of the B-26 “My Gal II” when it took off from the Dijon-Lonvic airfield January 19th, 1945 at 1:03 am on a bombing run to Achern, Germany. At 2:10pm, the plane fell out of formation due to technical problems and crashed a little later in Fountain, near Besancon, killing the entire crew. The villagers have held a memorial there every year since 1945. He also has a cenotaph located in Island Cemetery, Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island.
