Born February 1915 in Camden, New Jersey, later moved to Atco, New Jersey; attended Washington College (Chestertown, Maryland) 1935-1936 before appointment to West Point 1936-1940; Joined 7th Cavalry at Ft. Bliss where he was Troop Commander of Special Weapons Troop; tranfered to Fort Jackson, SC in January 43 to serve in the 2nd Cavalry. Had a son while living in Columbia, SC. Graduated from CGSC at Leavenworth in Sept 43 and rejoined the 2nd Cavalry as XO of the 42nd Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron. The Regiment was sent overseas in April 1944 and attached to Pattons's Third Army. The 42nd came to France in July 44. Pitman assumed command when his CO was hospitalized and led the squadron through France. Killed in Luneville and posthumously awarded the Silver Star.
