Lieutenant Buckner was born Feb. 13, 1919, in Minneapolis, a son of Mr. and Mr. Alfred P. Buckner. He attended Custer high school and the Montana State university and was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

In spring 1942 he enlisted in the army and in January 1944 he was sent overseas as a glider pilot with the 88th Squadron, 438th Troop Carrier Group. He took part in the Normandy invasion and the campaign in Holland. He was killed on site when a Horsa glider crashed on December 12, 1944 at Greenham Common, England. He is now buried in the Mountview Cemetery, Billings, Yellowstone County, Montana, USA at the age of 25.
