2nd Lt Alfred Casewell Emert, bombardier of the B-24 Liberator 42-72873 "S-Sugar", took off from Harrington, UK at 2313 on a resupply mission to the Trancrainville Resistance. Following a successful drop, the plane was shot down by a Me-110 at 0210 5km NW of Janville. All but one of the crew members died. The survivor, 2nd Lt Edward Tappan, escaped back to the UK. The dead airmen were initially buried in the Orléans-Les Aubrais cemetery by the French locals. Emert left behind a wife and child, born a month after his death.
