Sgt Ray E. Buckminster, left waist gunner of the B-17F 41-24478, took off from Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire’s submarine pens. Over the target area it was attacked by heavy flak and enemy fighters, forcing a lucky few crew members to bail out before the plane exploded in mid-air. Buckminster is now buried in the Concord Village Cemetery, Concord, Essex County, Vermont, USA.
