2nd Lt Abraham Lincoln “A. L.” Burden, bombardier of the B-17F 41-24478, took off from Thurleigh, Bedfordshire, UK on a bombing mission over St Nazaire’s submarine pens. Over the target area it was attacked by heavy flak and enemy fighters, forcing a lucky few crew members to bail out before the plane exploded in mid-air. Burden was among those few. He was captured and sent to Stalag Luft 3 in Sagan-Silesia and was a POW for 30 months.

Abraham died on January 31, 2005 at the age of 83 and is now buried in the Fort Smith National Cemetery, Fort Smith, Sebastian County, Arkansas, USA.
