TSgt Harold R. Vines, mechanic of the B-24 Liberator 42-63977 “Los Angeles City Limits”, took off from Station 114 Hetel, Norfolk, UK on a bombing mission to Ludwigshafen’s chemical factory. The mission was a success, but multiple bombers were shot down by German fighters on the return flight, including the “Los Angeles City Limits” at 1315. Vines managed to escape back to the UK on the MGB 503 on the night of 16-17 March 1944 per E&E report #457. He died in 1995. His organization is inscribed US Army on his headstone. This is incorrect because he served within the United States Air Force.
