SSgt George H. Stillwell, tail gunner of the B-24 Liberator 42-63977 “Los Angeles City Limits”, took off from Station 114 Hetel, Norfolk, UK on a bombing mission to Ludwigshafen’s chemical factory. The mission was a success, but multiple bombers were shot down by German fighters on the return flight, including the “Los Angeles City Limits” at 1315. Stillwell managed to escape through the Pyrenees/Spain/Gibraltar pipeline, returning to the UK on February 10th 1944 per E&E report #371.
